Spring is always such a busy time of year but so far this year has been busier and more devastating then most.
Two and a half weeks ago our herd was attacked by predators and we lost our liitle Skywalker (our cria pictured above) and Socrates one of our other young males. There were several others with injuries varying from mild to needing stitches.
After caring for the wounded and nursing them back to health we thought we were in the clear. Then exactly 2 weeks after the first attack there was a second, this time much worse. We lost 5 more alpaca (4 boys and 1 girl) and again there were other serious injuries.
After both attacks we had someone from the municipality come out to assess the situation and tried to appeal to the government for financial help to cover the loss of our animals. Both times we were rejected as we are not considered a farm as we don't generate enough income according to the farm tax rules. They did tell us that we need to put up predator fences and cameras, but again, the government would not be assisting with the costs.
We know we need the predator fences (electric) to help keep our herd safe, but when we looked into the costs the $20,000 is just WAY beyond our means. So we've decided to appeal to our online community for help. We have started a fund on GoFundMe.com. The address is https://www.gofundme.com/saveouralpacas . We hope to have enough money to get at least the basics to begin the fencing by the end of may so that we can have the fencing in place before the birthing season in July. We are very grateful for any donations as every little bit helps us get closer to ensuring our animals are in a safe environment.
